Collaborations between Latin and Spanish artists have opened doors for new audiences to enjoy Latin-influenced music. One example of this cross-pollination can be seen with Argentine DJ Bizarrap’s hit with Spain’s Quevedo as proof.
Rosalia is another contemporary Spanish artist who has made waves with her innovative style and emotive lyrics. Her music fuses flamenco and folk elements, adding modern flare.
Lola Flores
Dolores Flores Ruiz (Lola), born and raised in Jerez de la Frontera, became fascinated with performing arts at an early age. She soon began singing and dancing at parties and family events before eventually making her stage debut in Luces de Espana.
She gained great renown due to her captivating presence and talent onstage, earning her much praise from audiences both theater and cinema audiences alike. One highlight in 1943 was being featured on Zambra with flamenco singer Manolo Caracol; an experience which marked both professionally as well as romantically for both.
In 1951 she signed a contract with Suevia films, an advertising and film production company which offered her work on several movies including La nina de la venta with Ramon Torrado in 1951 and Ay penita pena! with Miguel Morayta in 1953.
Najwa Nimri
Najwa Nimri Urrutikoetxea first rose to fame as a singer-songwriter before transitioning into leading roles for some of Spain’s sexiest exports from the late ’90s and early 2000s. Additionally, she established herself as an accomplished musician by producing electronic records.
Her music fuses pop, rock and electronic elements; her lyrics often address issues of love and loss. She has released several studio albums such as Carefully and Rat Race.
She has earned fame both in film and TV with roles such as Nuria in Open Your Eyes and Elena in Sex and Lucia by Julio Medem, with current shows Vis a Vis on Antena 3 and FOX Spain where she currently stars.
Bebe
Bebe is an international pop superstar best known for her rebellious pop music and vocal activism. Born Bleta Rexha in Brooklyn, New York, Bebe discovered her musical gifts early and learned multiple instruments before joining choirs as she performed choral arrangements of religious songs. Bebe has collaborated with artists across genres, earning fame both on her own recordings as well as through contributions she’s made for others’ albums.
She possesses a natural talent for moving between genres seamlessly, whether she’s rapping on “Siete Horas” or unleashing her vocal powers for “Malo”. Even today she remains an accomplished performer–though with shorter hair than before and no mullet to speak of!
Bebe, short for Baby in Latin bebai, is used affectionately and playfully as an affectionate nickname for women.
Thalia
Thalia has released ten studio albums. Her eponymous debut album debuted at number eight in the U.S. and became a top ten hit in Mexico; Lunada followed soon thereafter as another success.
Vaselina and Timbiriche, two of her telenovelas, are beloved worldwide, receiving high ratings in more than 180 countries. She participated in 1991 in Juguemos a Cantar music festival where she placed second with her rendition of “Moderna Nina del Rock.”
Thalia’s latest album, desAMORfosis, marks a departure from her earlier works. It’s an eclectic and experimental collection featuring different genres such as bachata, banda and reggaeton pop – it represents her musical evolution as she explores identity through music. For this endeavor she enlisted key figures of El Movimiento like Jhay Cortez and Myke Towers to collaborate on it with her.
Mana
Manu Chao, a Spanish musician renowned for his contributions to music industry. His unique blend of flamenco, rock and pop influences is distinguished by emotive lyrics and engaging melodies.
He uses his fame to advocate for social and political issues. He has spoken out against injustices in Venezuela and Bolivia, and publicly supported Latino voting rights here in America.
