Rocio Jurado, the beloved Spanish singer who passed away from pancreatic cancer at her Madrid home on 1 June at age 61 was well known throughout both Spain and Latin America. Her illness had been treated over two years by doctors.
Maria Del Rocio Trinidad Mohedano was born in Chipiona, Andalusia’s flamenco capital region, at 13 and began winning radio contests shortly thereafter. At age 19 she made her film debut with “Los Guerrilleros”.
She performed mostly romantic ballads known as coplas, although she occasionally also sang gypsy and flamenco tunes. She was widely acclaimed for both her voice and stage performances which evoked ocean waves.
David Bisbal
David Bisbal began his professional singing career at 17 as part of Orchestra Expressions in Almeria. Soon thereafter he made history when he finished as the runner-up on Operacion Triunfo’s Spanish version in 2001.
His debut album Corazon Latino sold over one million copies across Spain and America, while Buleria earned 30 IFPI Platinum awards.
In 2007, Premonicion became a smash success across North and Latin America, selling over 5 million albums worldwide and serving as an influential crossover international artist who introduced flamenco duende into chart-topping pop songs.
Luz Casal
Luz Casal (whose first name translates to “light”) was one of Spain’s most beloved singers in the 1980s with hits like Un Nuevo Dia Brillara (a Spanish cover of Etienne Daho’s French tune).
She appeared in Pedro Almodovar’s 1991 film High Heels as Agustin Lara’s theme song Piensa en Mi.
Her music combines ballads and lively songs, and she has performed at some of Spain’s most iconic locations. Additionally, she is widely known for her charitable efforts and frequent television show appearances. In 2022 she released a live album with Real Filharmonia de Galicia that features Alice Wonder and Andres Suarez amongst others as its featured musicians – making for a riveting listening experience!

Belinda was one of the icons of La Movida Madrilea, a countercultural movement which emerged in Madrid around 1980 with influences from British punk. She released numerous albums such as Palabra de Mujer and Aprender a Vivir which became bestsellers.
