Camilo Sesto and Nino Bravo have amassed an immense fan base thanks to their romantic ballads. Their lyrics feature simple structures and vocabulary which is ideal for developing expressive language skills in learners.
1. Luis Miguel
Luis Miguel is an icon in latin pop and one of the top-selling artists ever in that genre. With his 1991 release Romance, he transformed from teenage idol to an expert interpreter of classic boleros.
His follow-up album Amarte Es un Placer earned two Latin Grammys and cemented his standing as a leading dance-floor crooner, yet the following year saw further experiments into R&B and Funk music, producing such hits as “O Tu, O Ninguna.”
Rosalia revolutionized Spanish music in 2018 with songs like “Malamente.” Her direct style and everyday vocabulary can help students quickly learn contemporary Spanish; however, some metaphors or cultural references may prove more challenging for newcomers.
2. Enrique Iglesias
He holds the record for most number-one singles on Billboard’s Latin charts and holds onto his longstanding success through hits such as Bailamos, Rhythm Divine, Be With You and Escape – which have taken him across the world.
Enrique Iglesias has made headlines across the world, selling out stadiums and arenas worldwide with his concerts. As a musician, he has collaborated with notable figures like Pitbull, Whitney Houston and Lionel Richie; even appearing in commercials for Tommy Hilfiger and Doritos!
Born in Madrid, Spain and later moving to Miami Florida as a child to live with his father Julio Iglesias, he attempted to distance himself from his legacy by starting his musical career using several pseudonyms and acting in some movies and guesting staring on Two and Half Men TV show.
3. Camilo Sesto
Camilo Sesto was once an enormous star, known for his silky balladeer voice and showbiz glamour – donning white suits, medallioned chests and bouffant locks. Against Franco’s wishes he staged an adaptation of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar production in Madrid; on opening night (November 1975) outside his theatre was transformed into an elaborate circus spectacle!
Sesto sold millions of albums worldwide and wrote and produced for artists like Miguel Bose, Angela Carrasco and Jose Jose. But his true legacy was his role as figurehead of Spain’s transition into a new era – he died aged 72 from Alicante (Camilo Blanes Cortes) where he lived before becoming one of Latin music’s biggest romantic pop hitmakers and superstars.
4. Miguel Rios
On 2 January 1962, Polygram Records recorded four songs for an EP that eventually earned top ranking at Radio Granada’s classification system. Later that same year they issued two records that ventured further into rock sinfonico music: Despierta and Unidos respectively.
In 1991, Mira hacia ti began publishing their collection and touring Latinoamerica.
Miguel Rios has seen his musical style evolve over the past two decades from early rock and roll through progressive, to progressive-pop and now pop. He has worked with an abundance of Spanish and Hispanoamerican artists – Sabina, Victor Manuel and Ana Belen to name just three – while touring extensively alongside them. Additionally he performed at Granada Jazz Festival alongside American saxofonist Benny Golson in 2004.
5. Raphael
Raphael (Miguel Rafael Martos Sanchez, born 1959) is one of Spain’s best-known singers. With his expansive multi-octave range and charismatic stage presence, his songs have sold millions and he performed at major venues worldwide. Additionally, he made appearances as both movie and TV actor.
Some know Raphael as a Renaissance painter, while others see him as the legendary Mutant Ninja Turtle with the red bandana. No matter your perspective, one thing is certain – Raphael has had an immeasurable influence over other artists throughout his long and distinguished career. He continues to tour and record albums; being featured in 2022 documentary Raphaelismo docuseries as well. Most recently released is his album Raphael De Vuelta this year after recovering from liver transplant surgery earlier in 2018.
